Compatriots,
There is a bill before the Florida Legislature which requires our attention and action. HB 591 (as currently written)

Prohibits the relocation, removal, disturbance, or alteration of a monument, memorial, plaque, marker, or historic flag commemorating or memorializing specified wars and military engagements displayed on public property of the state or any of its political subdivisions. Prohibits any person or organization from preventing the public or private body responsible for the protection, preservation, or care of such monument, memorial, plaque, marker, or historic flag from exercising its responsibility to provide protection, preservation, or care. Provides a second degree misdemeanor penalty for violation.

Date: Fri, 9 Mar 2001

Dear Compatriots,

The Florida Historic Monuments and Memorials Protection Act (HB 591) as of noon today has an unprecedented 42 co-sponsors in the Floirda House of Representatives. It has a long way to go yet and of course a democratic amendment will be voted on to exempt the Southern Flags. The Lord willing, I hope common sense will prevail in saving ALL of history, not just the history sanctioned by the forces of 'political correctness.' Please take the time to PRAY for the Bill and for Representative Bev Kilmer as she attempts to preserve all of history and those that made it.

Respectfully yours,
Dr. Dennis Raitt

--- I just spoke to Bev. The speaker said the Bill had a problem and could not be heard unless there were 2 provisions:

1. A provision to move the roadside plaques and monuments while construction is going on, then replace them as close as possible to the original position. 2. Courthouse expansion and other public building expansion must have a way of moving monuments and replacing them etc.

He said if that was done he would see it on the floor.!!!!! Bev and the lawyers are in the process of amending it at this time.

She is getting lots of phone calls and emails to support the bill. Keep it up. It is really helpful to her to get letters she can present on the floor if necessary.

Joyce
