Subject: Untie the Other Half of Your Brain 031901 Dear Mr. Limbaugh, I know you are a well-educated man. You proclaim constantly how you abhor ignorance. I suggest you untie the other half of your brain and read at least some of the following:
The War for Southern Independence did concern slavery. It was not all about slavery. There were other issues involved. Slaves, like it or not, were considered property, property that many Southerners had a large investment in. Slaves were property that Southerners wished to be able to dispose of, and recover their investment in, just as the North had done, and was still in the process of doing. The North started selling most of their slaves to the South, where there was a large demand. They also disposed of many of their slaves overseas. In most areas of the North it had become abhorrent to the majority of whites to work along side blacks. Northerners did not want to compete with low wage earners. You could not take a black man and place him in a position alongside a white Northerner. The South had a justifiable concern that the North was going to dictate to them how they would dispose of their property. The South wanted to decide this issue for themselves. It would be no different if, say for example, the Federal Government decided to ban automobiles completely. Most people have a large investment in their automobiles. Most people would want to be compensated for their loss and rightfully so. Keep in mind, the North was not as compassionate as they would have you believe. For example: in most Northern states a free black man was not allowed to live there by order of law. However, a free black man could not only live in the South, but he could also own a business. Note that the "Underground Railroad" did not terminate in the North. Runaway slaves had to be shuttled all the way to Canada for their safety. President Lincoln wished to remove all black men from the Country. He proposed to use them to colonize other areas. He even had areas selected. All of this information is in his own hand. In numerous writings of President Lincoln he clearly states the black man was not considered an equal to the white man. Does this sound like the comments of a person who is not a "racist"? Thomas Jefferson realized because of the diversity of the people making up this country it was important for each state to maintain its sovereignty. Each state would make and enforce their laws as they saw the need to do. Thomas Jefferson, along with many others, was afraid of exactly what occurred after the War for Southern Independence: The usurpation of power, by the Federal Government, from those whom it derived its authority from. At no time did the founding fathers see the Federal Government having a controlling vote over the States. Each state was to be equal in power to the Federal Government. This is clearly demonstrated by the ratification of the Constitution by the states. It is also demonstrated by England's recognition of the colonies freedom. The King name each colony individually and separately in his concession. He did not refer to the United States of America. You are clearly of the belief that this country is "indivisible". It is divisible. Our founding fathers foresaw it to be so. All you need do is read the writings of Publis, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, George Washington, Patrick Henry, Benjamin Franklin (most, if not all, Southerners) and the many other great "men" who risked all they had so that we might be free, free from an oppressive government, free from a centralized form of government. Like it or not, this country will divide. It will come with the increased number of Islamic, Hispanic, Asian, and other peoples whose cultures are so divisive. The time will come, when one or more of these groups of people, just as our Southern forefathers, will decide they will want to determine their own fate. Their cultural differences will force the issue. It is no different than the issues which separated, and continue to separate, South from North, North from West, or Hawaii from the main land. When the separation comes, hopefully it will be a peaceful one. I personally believe the Federal Government will not allow it to be so. The Southern people have a very proud heritage. We have a culture which is unique. We have the God given right to govern ourselves, just as the other peoples of this world. Just as our Southern forefathers we care not to "over-throw" the Federal Government. We believe all those who wish to be ruled by the Federal Government should have that choice. We are far more educated than perhaps the Federal Government would like. We are educated enough to know that the South is our country. Our forefathers built this country and made it the great place it is. A great place to live, raise our children, worship, work and fight for. I pray, some day we will free ourselves. Reviewing what a 136 years of occupation has done for the Southern people, proves to me the Federal Government is not the compassionate ruler you would make them out to be. However, as I have stated earlier, if you wish to be ruled by them you have my blessings. For Southern Independence, I am Mac Watters, PE/PLS Deo Vindice! |
